Yahoo, eBay Warm up to VeriSign's Identity Program
February 14, 2006
Yahoo and eBay are towing the line of VeriSign, which launched a unique online identity program. The program titled VIP will allow users to use a single
authentication testimonial across all VIP-enabled sites.
The VeriSign Identity Protection (VIP) suite has an identity authentication network that will allow customers to use one verification credential across all the
VIP-enabled sites, including eBay and its online payment service PayPal. The VIP Service has two-factor authentication using an open standard from the Initiative
for Open Authentication, or Oath.
Rob Chestnut, senior vice president of trust and safety eBay, said,"Online security is central to everything we do." The VIP suite is a dream come true for many online
financial institutions and e-commerce sites, as it would enable the application of a compact authentication through shared infrastructure.
SanDisk, the technology partner of VeriSign, will support VIP in producing and marketing Oath-compliant USB, mass-storage and flash devices. Motorola will pitch in by planning
mobile devices using this technology.
The VIP suite has a fraud detection program, using anomaly detection technology. In the near future, VeriSign will add a fraud intelligence network that would enable the users
to share fraud data and signature. A VeriSign VIP portal, which will allow users to get support directly from VeriSign for VIP-enabled devices, is expected to hit the market
by mid-2006.
Yahoo and eBay have signed up for the VIP suite. In the light of the ever growing cases of online fraud, many companies will be following their footsteps in the
near future.
